What should I do if people think I am lying? (Anxiety Relief) | 7 Cups

Douay-Rheims Bible And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. If you really could make a lie sound true by repetition, there'd be no need for all the other techniques of persuasion. One obstacle is what you already know. Even if a lie sounds plausible, why would you set what you know aside just because you heard the lie repeatedly? Recently, a team led by Lisa Fazio of Vanderbilt University set out to test how the illusion of truth effect interacts with our prior knowledge. Would it affect our existing knowledge? They used paired true and un-true statements, but also split their items according to how likely participants were to know the truth so "The Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean on Earth" is an example of a "known" items, which also happens to be true, and "The Atlantic Ocean is the largest ocean on Earth" is an un-true item, for which people are likely to know the actual truth.

To cover all bases, the researchers performed one study in which the participants were asked to rate how true each statement seemed on a six-point scale, and one where they just categorised each fact as "true" or "false". Repetition pushed the average item up the six-point scale, and increased the odds that a statement would be categorised as true. For statements that were actually fact or fiction, known or unknown, repetition made them all seem more believable.

At first this looks like bad news for human rationality, but — and I can't emphasise this strongly enough — when interpreting psychological science, you have to look at the actual numbers. What Fazio and colleagues actually found, is that the biggest influence on whether a statement was judged to be true was With or without repetition, people were still more likely to believe the actual facts as opposed to the lies. The next question has to be, why might that be? Honest people always seem to cop it worse than those who lie.

Friendly Indians - I Know You Know Lyrics

No one knows why. But honesty is always the best way. And if you are telling the truth, that is all that matters. We cannot control what others believe. We can change our behaviours so believing is more likely, but we cannot change how others see things.

Shawn Mendes - Treat You Better

Take care of ourselves, the truth will find them. If you know that you are telling the truth, why worry about others ; its just a waste of time. If someone thinks you're lying and even if you're not, just let them think whatever they want- you trying to convince them isn't going to solve the problem. If you really aren't lying, you should not worry about it. If they don't believe you, there isn't much you can do about it.

If it's about something really important, then it might be important to have a deeper conversation with these people. Anonymous March 10th, pm. If people believe you at lying then you can show them proof but do not get defensive about it or no matter what you show them they wont believe you. Prove to them with concrete arguments that you are not. Sometimes supported by proof people tend to trust more. Anonymous October 19th, pm. Just ignore them if you know you are telling the truth then you have nothing to worry about. And the truth always comes out and then they will be proved wrong. You could try and prove to people with hard evidence papers or receipts or whatever is needed that you are being truthful but in most cases you will just have to trust that in time they will come to trust you and be able to see that you have been truthful with them.

Anonymous December 28th, pm. Maybe I should not be ambiguous and work harder on my speech ability in order to be more clear. There's no reason at all to lie in a place like this.

Anonymous February 2nd, am. You can either try to assure them - that you are being honest and they should believe you and give you the benefit of doubt. Anonymous June 28th, pm. I feel like you should first try to understand why they think you are lying and then try to talk to them about it.
